Nerve blocks

Image
Celiac plexus blocks are injections of pain medication that help relieve abdominal pain, commonly due to cancer or chronic pancreatitis. The celiac plexus is a bundle of nerves that surrounds the aorta, the main artery into your abdomen. Blocking these nerves from carrying pain information can help you stop feeling pain in your abdomen. A celiac plexus block does not heal or treat the cause of celiac disease. This procedure only aids in stopping the pain from ever reaching our main processing center, the brain. Genicular nerve block severe knee pain is a common complaint in people suffering from progressive disease like osteoarthritis. Pain is also common following a failed knee surgery like partial or total knee replacement. For many people, chronic knee pain can be treated by blocking pain signals that are fed into the knee through the genicular nerves. This procedure is called Genicular Nerve Block or Neurotomy.  Genicular nerve block/neurotomy is a relatively new techn...

Vascular malformations

Image
Vascular malformations--also known as birthmarks--occur when blood vessels develop abnormally. We use the term “vascular anomalies” to describe a number of abnormalities that affect children and young adults. These anomalies look like a blemish or mass that may cause pain, swelling, or bleeding. Vascular malformations often result from abnormal development in blood vessels, lymph vessels, veins, and/or arteries. Vascular malformations are usually present at birth, grow proportionally with the child, do not expand rapidly during infancy, and do not disappear. We sometimes see vascular malformations in older people, as blood flow increases through abnormal connections between arteries and veins. Vascular malformations can also come from fluid or blood accumulating in poorly formed veins or lymphatic channels. Vascular malformations can cause cosmetic deformities of the head and neck and can interfere with normal function in these areas. They also occur in other areas of the body and ...

Deep Vein thrombosis- Its not the blood thinners anymore !!!

When a blood clot (thrombus) is formed in one or more of the deep veins of your body (usually in the legs), it is known as  deep vein thrombosis (DVT) .  Sometimes this clot becomes detached from the inner walls of the blood vessel and travels to another part inside the body. DVT may develop due to an underlying medical condition particularly the one which affects the clotting of the blood .   Causes And Risk Factors: It can be caused by the factors which prevent the normal circulation of the blood and it’s clotting, such as long periods of rest (during a particular medical condition), injury to the vein, surgery and certain medications. The risk factors are as follows: Inherited blood clotting disorder Prolonged bed rest Surgery Pregnancy Contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy Obesity Smoking Cancer Heart failure Inflammatory bowel disease Age (usually older than 60 years but can also occur at any age) Complications: The...

Thyroid ablation- new frontier of non-surgical minimally invasive treatment

Image
Thyroid nodules are a lump or mass of cells on the thyroid gland. In the majority of the cases, the nodules are small, asymptomatic, and often discovered by the doctor on routine medical examination or during a scanning done for other health reasons. The incidence of thyroid nodules is very common in adults and is detected in about 5-7% of adults during routine physical examination and in about 20-75% of adults during ultrasound scanning. Thyroid nodules are more common in female than males. However, thyroid nodules in children are less common. Although a very common finding, most often, in fact almost 95% of the thyroid nodules are benign, meaning the nodules do not have any cancer cells, do not cause any symptoms, or require any treatment. However, in some cases, treatment may be required when the glands may grow and become visibly large interfering with breathing and swallowing, may cause hoarseness of voice or pain in the neck, and may lead to enlargement of the thyroid gla...
